Top 5 Campus Printing Mistakes and How to Avoid Them
Campus printing is supposed to be quick and easy. However, in the rush to submit an assignment before a deadline, simple oversight can lead to printing failures, formatting issues, or wasted paper.
At MIMO, we've designed our self-service kiosks and mobile dashboard to guide you through every step. But to ensure you have a perfect experience, it helps to be aware of the most common user pitfalls. In this guide, we'll cover the top five printing mistakes students make and provide practical solutions to keep your printouts seamless.
Mistake 1: Not Reviewing File Formats and Margins
While our cloud processors accept Word (.doc, .docx) and image formats, these files are subject to minor spacing shifts depending on the system font libraries. If your file contains custom fonts, icons, tables, or math formulas, they might not align correctly.
The Fix: Always export your document as a **PDF** before uploading. Open the PDF on your phone to verify the layout, and ensure your page margins are set to at least **0.5 inches** (1.27 cm) so the physical printer rollers don't crop your margins.
Mistake 2: Mixing Up Kiosk Configurations (B&W vs. Color)
On campus, different kiosks house different hardware configurations. For example, Kiosk **CV-001** is a high-speed monochrome laser printer built for quick black and white sheets. Kiosk **SV-002** is configured with dual printers to support both monochrome laser and vibrant Epson inkjet color printing.
If you purchase a color print, the system expects you to collect it from a kiosk equipped with a color printer (SV-002).
The Fix: Verify the kiosk name on the physical station. Select your settings in the mobile dashboard accordingly, and make sure you walk to the correct kiosk to enter your 4-digit code.
Mistake 3: Uploading Files that Exceed Size Limits
Students occasionally try to upload slides or scan booklets that are extremely heavy (sometimes over 40MB). While our servers can hold these files, they trigger slow upload times over cellular data, and can take up to 2 minutes to download onto the physical kiosk controller.
The Fix: If your PDF is too large, use a free online PDF compressor (like Adobe PDF Compressor or Smallpdf) to reduce the file size to under **15MB**. This speeds up transmission times, allowing your print code to generate instantly.
Mistake 4: Not Staying at the Kiosk During Color Prints
Black & white laser prints spool and eject near-instantly (under 8 seconds). Color inkjet printers, however, operate differently. Inkjets (like the Epson L3250) execute automated print-head maintenance cycles upon wake-up, taking about 30 seconds to initialize before ejecting color pages.
Students sometimes see the kiosk progress bar hit 100%, assume the print failed because no paper came out immediately, and walk away—leaving their printed sheets in the public output tray.
The Fix: When printing color documents, check the kiosk screen overlay. The interface displays a countdown telling you to stay at the printer. Wait for the countdown to expire and collect your color sheets.
Mistake 5: Panicking If the Printer Jams or Runs Out of Paper
If the kiosk jams, disconnects, or runs out of paper mid-job, some students worry that they have lost their money and need to file manual complaints.
The Fix: Relax! MIMO has a built-in safety net. Our Raspberry Pi listeners monitor CUPS queue states in real-time. If the printer encounters a hardware error, the listener flags the job as a failure, and our server triggers an **automatic, instant refund** directly back to your UPI account or debit card. You'll see a green "Refund in Progress" alert, ensuring you never pay for a failed transaction.
